In certain cases, copying is better than innovation. Constitution-writing is one of those businesses. Surely, you wouldn't want to get adventurous in this field, would you?
Also, Indian constitution-writers did not want to leave anything unexplained. Not very many people were optimistic about India's capacity to retain a democratic setup. Naysayers were already writing India's obituary as a single country when paritition-related riots broke out. Gray areas and legal loopholes are usually used by dictators to grab the power, and sustain themselves (look in Pakisntan's history of legal coups for that). Plus, many people, including Ambedkar had misgivings about the ability of the pre-dominantly Upper-caste bureaucracy and political leaders to do justice to lower castes and other oppressed people. Hence, you'll notice that reservations and other protections to Scheduled Castes and Tribes are written in the Constitution themselves (the 'Schedule' referred to in the terms 'Scheduled Castes' and 'Scheduled Tribes' actually means a schedule of the Constitution of India.
I think this is one of the reasons that India has never really had a consitutional crisis, a situation where constitution doesn't explain what to do.
