Indian farmers recultant to grow Opium on their lands bcoz of the following reasons:
1. Opium can be cultivated only on well manured lands. Often pulses were produced on these lands.Growing opium on these lands would have meant that pulses would have to been grown on lands of inferior quality. This would result in bad harvest of pulse.
2.Many cultivators owned no land. Hence they had to cultivate land by paying rent and leasing lands from land owners. The rent whuch was paid very high which made it impossible to pay.
3.The price paid by the government to the cultivators was very low.
