WHY INDIAN FARMERS SHOULD GROW MORE PULSES ?

Nitrogen gas is needed by plants. But they can not use it in the form how carbon dioxide is used. They need it in soluble form. The bacterium rhizobium can convert atmospheric nitrogen to soluble form. But RHIZOBIUM can't make its own food. so it grows in leguminous plants (most of the pulses are obtained from leguminous plants) and provides them with nitrogen. In return, plants provide them with food and sgelter to the bacteria(symbiotic association). This association is of great significance for the farmers as they do not need to add nitrogen fertilisers to the soil in which leguminous plants grow.
