Indian thinkers, writers, philosophers and artists did not leave behind very much personal information about their lives. Even their students and followers didn’t record too much about them. For example, Kalidasa is the most acclaimed poet philosopher of Sanskrit, but hardly anything is known about his life or time.
This is not because Indians were lousy record-keepers. There are all kinds of official records of land grants, business agreements, punishments, decrees, etc. on different kinds of material like copper plates, clay tablets, stone edicts and temple walls.
