The Indians were reluctant to produce opium because of the following reasons :-

1) Farmers got very low prices for cultivating opium.

2)They earned no profit by cultivating opium.

2)They had to spend a lot of time in cultivating and nurturing opium plant. This is because opium is a plant which requires lot of nurturing.

3)As a result they were not able to take good care of their crops.

4)Also , the cultivation was to be done only on the best fields. But on these fields , the farmers grew their pulses

5)Most of the farmers were poor.As a result , they had to rent land to cultivate opium
