There are several reasons for it

1)  As there is diversity in languages also in India there should be some medium through different persons have a talk.So most of the Indians opted for English..But a question may arise that why English not Hindi ? Reason is some of Indian states are against Hindi particularly dravian states are opposing it because they believe that it was of aryan origin..

2) This reason seems to be more realistic.. With the diffusion of western culture into India people who don't speak in English were usually seen as culture less people and in some places barbaric. So in order get rid of that people are wishing to speak in English abandoning their own languages

3)  With the advent of British western education has its roots in India which was taught in English. So in order to pursue this secular education they began to speak in English..

Hope this will help you.....
