why interstitial hydrides have a lower density than the parent metal??

Since in interstitial hydrides there is point defect in which cations get deviated fron its original site to interstitial site , due this the density decreases but the electrical nutrality ramains same....:-)

Interstitial compounds are the one which is used to describe the compound that is formed when an atom of lower radius sit on the interstitial hole of any of the metal lattice.

The empty space that lies in between the molecules are of the pure metal are small as compared to the parent metal.
