Iodine stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone. Deficiency of this hormone results in the enlargement of the thyroid gland. This can lead to goiter.

thyroid hormone also regulates carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism in our body.

therefore, iodized salt is necessary as there is iodine added hence providing all the benefits our body needs.
