why ionic compounds have high melting point?

The bond is formed between a metal and a non metal i.e., two oppositely charge elements( cations and anions)
This would increase the force of attraction between them which holds them tightly, hence these forces cannot be destroyed easily. (Ex. NaCl, MgCl, etc..)

Hope it helps...!!!

In an ionic compound there is large electrostatic force of attraction between opposite charged ions. To overcome these forces a considerable amount of energy is needed therefore ionic compounds have high melting points.
