Highly Charged Ions. ... Ions are atoms with either more or less electrons than protons. Negative ions are relatively rare in the Universe, because they require adding electrons to atoms, which want to get rid of them. Positive ions, on the other hand, exist whenever electrons can be removed from atoms.

Answer: Huge amount of energy is required for both the processes.

Explanation:

Ions are formed when an element looses or gains electrons.

When an element looses electrons, it will form positive ions and when an element gains electrons, it will form negative ions.

To loose or gain electrons, some amount of energy is required.

Energy required to loose electrons is known as ionization enthalpy and the energy required to gain electrons is known as electron gain enthalpy.

Thus, for an element to form three positive ions, it will require a huge amount of energy to loose 3 electrons. Same is for the element which forms three negative ions, it will require a huge amount of energy to gain 3 electrons.

Hence, huge amount of energy is required for both the processes.
