Why iron and water gives ferrous oxide, why not ferrous hydroxide?

Iron is a reactive metal ,it means it is oxidizing agent it means the subtraction of hydrogen or addition of oxygen so the iron and water gives ferrous oxide not ferrous hydroxide.
