interstitial carbides derive primarily from relatively large transition metals that act as a host lattice for the small carbon atoms which occupy the interstices of closed packed metal atoms. Fe,Co,Ni do not form typical interstitial carbides because their atoms are too small in size.
Fe,Co,Ni form intermediate transitional metal carbides.
