Zinc is more electro-positive than iron. Therefore, as long as zinc is there on the iron pipe, zinc acts as anode and the iron as cathode. As a result, rusting of iron is prevented.

Hey !!

Zinc has lower reduction potential than iron. Therefore, zinc coating acts as anode and the exposed iron portions acts as cathode. If zinc coating is broken, zinc still undergoes oxidation, protecting iron from rusting. No attack occurs on iron till at the zinc is corroded.

Hope it helps you !!
