Answer:
India’s Geographical extent is from 68.03 E to 97.17 E.
82.5 E (82 deg 30 min) happens to be in the middle of 68.03 E and 97.17 E (exact middle is 82.6 E).
The idea of a single time zone made more sense because the extent was not big enough to have usage of 2 time zones. Standard time zones from the prime meridian were at 15 degree intervals and going by that India would have had two time zones. (UTC + 5 & UTC +6). But this would mean the entire setup adopting to different time zones which would result in confusion. Hence, it was decided to have a centrally located uniform time across India.
However, the easternmost region do advance their clocks by one hour in order to carry out daily activities.
