why is a compass needle kept in a closed glass box ?

The container protects the compass needle from these external unbalanced forces so as to stabilise the needle pointer, in turns determining the right north direction. ... It is sealed to keep dirt and contaminants out of the housing to reduce wear between the needle and the pivot in an air filled compass.
