a convex lens is called a converging lens because when parallel rays of light fall on such a lens, the rays will get refracted and after refraction they will converge at a focal point at a certain distance away from the lens
a concave lens is called a diverging lens because when parallel rays of light when directed towards it, it will diverge after refraction.when traced backward, these rays will appear to be coming from a focal point in front of the lens
