why is a desert not thickly populated ?

Deserts have sandy soil and scarcity of water. Due to this, less vegetation exists here. The climate here is hot and dry too. Womem have to walk miles to bring water (in remote regions).Farmers barely live in desert regions and choose areas like punjab and UP to inhabitate. People also don't prefer to live here due to the discomfort too. This is the reason deserts are not thickly populated.
