The word vowel refers to the sounds of a language which are made with the open cavity of the mouth back to the larynx. Vowels do not utilize the tongue touching the the teeth or roof of the mouth. They do not reply on the lips coming together in any way to form their sound.
We know a, e, i, o, and u are vowels because they meet this criteria.
