The flow of energy is unidirectional because the energy lost as heat to the environment can’t be reutilized by plants for photosynthesis. Energy decrease at each trophic level (10% of previous level). Hence it can’t be reused again. Whereas, biochemical transfer is cyclic because nutrients utilized by plants and animals are returned to environment after the death of organisms.
