why is a few drops of dilh2s04 added to water in electrolysis of water?

Adding the acid to water makes the water to conduct electricity.

Adding Hydrochloric acid to water in electrolysis experiment:

since distilled water is a non-conductor in this experiment, to make the water which is to be increased in conductivity, hydrochloric acid is added.
