the rails of railway track are made up of steel.while laying the railway tracks on wooden or cocrete planks ,a small gap is left between the successive lengths .The reason of that in summer due to considerable rise in atmospheric temperature ,each rail tends to increase in in it's leangth so the gap left between the trail track

Materials are subject to thermal expansion: a tendency to expand when heated, and to contract when cooled. For this reason, Railway Tracks are built with metal expansion joints, so that they can expand and contract without causing faults in the overall structure of the Track
For example 1 mile of Steel length would expand by 4 inches ( 20 cms ) when Temperature increases by 10 degrees Celsius.
The Rail track would otherwise bend and twist and cause accidents , hence a gap is kept with a metal expansion joint to safeguard the track.
