why is a longer bsmall intestine needed to digest cellulose

Because cellulose is hard to digest and shorter small intestine is not able to digest it.

YOUR ANSWER: A longer intestine would host many small bacteria that process and break down cellulose into glucose, a source of energy which a host herbivore can use. Without the long intestines, animals such as cows could still eat grass, but would not be able to use the glucose stored in the grass structure. That's why longer small intestine digests cellulose.
