Acetylene being an unsaturated hydrocarbon, burns incompletely in air due to which a sooty flame is produced with very low temperature. On the other hand when a mixture of acetylene and pure oxygen is burnt, then it gives rise to the complete combustion of acetylene to produce a blue flame with a very high temperature which can be used to weld the metals.
