Shadows are created when a light beam coming from a source is blocked by a body.
Penumbra is the part of shadow where only partial light is blocked by the body.
In the case when light is coming from a point source, the rays radiate outwards from the source and hence are not parallel.
So, the shadow produced is as a result of the complete blocking of light.
Therefore, only umbra is formed as the shadow and no penumbra is obtained.
Photographers often use a point source of light to shoot photographs free of penumbra.
