Acids dissociate to produce ions which in turn increase conductivity. Adding an acid makes the waterconduct electricity. Assuming that distilled water is being in the experiment, which is a non conductor of electricity we need to make thewater conduct electricity forelectrolysis to occur. Hence the acid isadded

Small amount of Dil. Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) is added to water for electrolysis to make it dissociate in water completely so as to provide an increase in the conductivity of water. The water taken for electrolysis being distilled cannot dissociate it's ions to conduct electricity.

sooru679: we can also say that electrolysis of pure water is not so easy because water is a covalent bond and i cant dissociate to release electron thats why we use small amount of dil. sulphuric acid to it or being a strong acid it can ionize completely to give H+ ions
sooru679: but your answer is also right
