The 'stationary bus' suddenly speeds up passengers are thrown in the 'backward direction'. This happens due to Newton’s first law of Motion.
EXPLANATION:
The concept involved here is called inertia of rest. As the bus starts the 'lower parts of the body' is in contact with bus moves along with the bus, whereas upper part is still in the state of rest. As the result the passenger just are thrown backward direction, they don’t fall down.
