Increase the resistance
The purpose of bulb filament to convert electrical energy into heat energy and hence it glow at very high temperature (light energy). As per the Joule's law of heating effect the heat generated in a resistor will be directly proportional to it's resistance that's why we coil the tungsten to increase the resistance in less space. ( Resistance is directly proportional to the length)

Because they have high melting point which increases the life of the bulb, it's melting point is about 3300 *celcius.
