Bed sheets are made of thin cloth and normally come in pairs, one for below the sleeper and one for above. Nowadays the lower one is often a "fitted sheet", which has elastic sewn into the edges to hold it onto the mattress, and the top one will be a "flat sheet". The sheets protect the rest of the bedding from oils, odor, skin flakes etc from the sleeper, and are made to be laundered.
On top of the sheets would traditionally go zero or more blankets, depending on the season and climate.
The bed spread is then the ornamental cover over everything else. It may be thick and function as an extra blanket or very light. Nowadays many people use a with a decorative cover rather than a traditional blanket/bedspread combination.
