Abscisic acid is called stress hormones as it induces various responses in plants against stress conditions. It increases the tolerance of plants toward various stresses. It induces the closure of the stomata during water stress.

a fairly high conc. of abscisic acid is found in leaves under stress conditions like during drought, flood etc..

it is accompanied by loss of turgor and closure of stomata

when such plants are transferred to normal conditions they regain normal turgor and abscisic acid conc. decreases.

since the synthesis of this acid is accelerated under stress conditions and the same is destroyed when stress in relieved ....

it is known as stress hormone
