Aldehydes undergo reaction with the monohydric alcohol to produce hemiacetals or alkoxyalcohol intermediate.The dry hydrogen chloride present in the reaction protonates the oxygen atom present in the carbonyl structure thereby increasing the electrophilicity of the carbonyl carbon
