Factors that made is difficult for the explorer to venture in to the continent of africa were: The largest desert in the world, the Sahara Desert acted as a natural barrier for the European explorers

because it is near to the equator through which the afternoons are very hot and people living there are hence black.
and
it has many dence forests which are growing due to climate conditions
hence it is called as a dark continent
