why is agriculture not developed over the velds

Agriculture is not an important occupation in the veld because the soils are not very fertile in the velds due to the presence of discontinous grasses exposing barren surface. However where the land is fertile crops are grown.

The Velds receive rainfall only during the Summer months. But, the sheeps there produce wool all the times of the year. There, sheep breeding has become very common. Since the importance of Sheep rearing is more, there is only a little attention for agriculture in the Velds.
