Agriculture is not widespread in desert because the water available there is not at all enough for growing both commercial and intensive agriculture

Desert is not supporting living of human being. If any place have necessary support for human to live, then he will look and think for doing all man made activities.Limited rain fall, high sun and strong winds are not good for any agriculture activities.The sand in deserts is not suitable for the growth of crops.
