Hey Mate!

He named himself Great! But he grew to become great in actuality!

Mughal emperors had a tradition of taking an imperial title when ascending to the throne, Zahir-ud-din Muhammad became Babur (‘Tiger’), Nur-ud-din Muhammad Salim became Jahangir (‘Lord of All’), and Jalal-ud-din Muhammad became Akbar-i-Azam (‘Favored of God, the Great’).

So, that is what he named himself! But he was the greatest of the mughal emperors, and by extension one of the greatest rulers of India, his great achivements being unification of most of north india, and the removal of the Jizya tax.

It’s important to remember the context of his rule, before him India had seen centuries of anarchy, punctuated by the rise and fall (at the hands of Babur) of the Delhi Sultanate. , starting with Akbar India would see nearly 200 years of stability, and it would be Akbar’s economic reforms that would set the stage for India’s economic renaissance, at one point it was estimated that India’s economy was 25% of the worlds GDP!

So, in essence imagine a farmer in present day Uttar Pradesh, one day he hears that there’s a new king who calls himself ‘the great’, and he is like, ‘meh’, but then he

He reduces tax on you to 1/3rd of your income, but adjustable on local conditions.

Reforms the army and ensures the longest period of peace in hundreds of years

Buoyed by tax cuts and good security, the economy surges to be the most valuable in the entire world

I guess then the farmer will be okay calling him ‘the great’ after all!
