Metals such as zinc, iron and copper are present in ores as their oxides. Each of these oxides is heated withcarbon to obtain the metal. The metal oxide loses oxygen, and is thereforereduced. ... Some metals, such asaluminium, are so reactive that their oxides cannot be reduced by carbon

Answer:

Aluminium is more reactive than carbon and it has more affinity for oxygen, therefore, alumina  cannot be reduced with carbon but is extracted by electrolytic reduction
