The metal iron is present in form of its oxide in the ore. it is heated with carbon to obtain the metal and the metal oxide is reduced, some metal such as aluminium could not be reduced from its oxide as it is more reactive so aluminium is used.

Answer:

Aluminium is a powerful reducing agent i.e., has great affinity for oxygen. Hence it reduces metallic oxides below it like iron oxides to metal, with evolution of lot of heat.
