A 500-metre pipeline has been laid from Kasturba Gandhi Marg till the Jyoti to light allthe flames. Amar Jawan Jyoti —the eternal flame— burns beneath the 42-metre high majestic arch of India Gate.It has been lit to honour the memoryof our unsung war heroes. The flame is kept alive all through the year. There are four flames at the base of the Jyoti and two on top...A separate burner is provided to control each individual flame. While only one flame is lit all through the year, on January 26 and August 15 all the flames are lit up.These are lit for 5 days continuously. About 16 LPG cylinders were used to keep this flame alive for five days. On an average, one LPG cylinder could keepone flame alive for one-and-a-half days. The cylinders had to be stocked on the rooftop of the memorial. According to sources, the defence ministry had been looking for alternatives since stocking so many LPG cylinders together was proving to be problematic.PNG, say sources, will be at least 20%cheaper for the ministry. Apart from being safer, PNG will be a reliable source of fuel. The gas will be supplied till India Gate circle and there will be regulators near the memorial structure. Regulators have been provided to regulate the supplyof PNG...Garrison, engineer of Military Engineering Serviceunder the defence ministry, will be in-charge of this flame.
