Why is ammonia said to be basic in nature even though it does not contain a hydroxyl group? Explain.

actually amonia have one lone pair .according to Lewis concept of acid and base.base which donate a pair of electron. so, amonia is basic, due to donatable electron.

Answer: Ammonia instead of not containing any hydroxyl ions yet it is basic in nature because when it is added to water it gives OH- ions as it forms ammonium hydroxide and shows the properties of base. behaves like base.
