An ammeter is connected in series with the circuit because the purpose of the ammeter is to measure the current through the circuits. The ammeter is a low impedance device connecting it in parallel with the circuit would cause a short circuit hence , damaging the ammeter and/or the circuit

ammeter used for measuring minor current flow in circuits...we always connected in series because of perfect measuring current flow...ammeter main purpose also measure accurate current flow in a circuit...If incase we connect in parallel... our aim is not fulfilled and ammeter low resistance also couldn't bare it..and ammeyer may damage..
