Why is an army tank made to move on a continuous chain called catterpillar chain

The chain has a larger area and hence the pressure exerted by the tank decreases. So the tank will also not sink in the ground. Heavy army tanks are very heavy and apply huge pressure on the land. So to overcome this pressure these tanks are made to move on wide continuous chain belts.
