why is an electric bulb filled with argon and nitrogen gas?

bulbs are filled with chemically inactive nitrogen or argon to prevent the oxidation of tungsten filament used in the bulb .

It is because it helps to save the filament from 'burning out' in the oxygen that is present in normal air.
