The purpose of using desiccators is to absorb moisture.

Anhydrous Calcium chloride (CaCl₂) has a capacity of absorbing moisture as it is hygroscopic in nature, so it is used as a desiccators.

An efflorescent substance is a chemical which has water associated with its molecules, and which, when exposed to air, loses this water through evaporation.

A common example of this phenomenon is the drying of cement.

Examples of  efflorescent substance

  1. CoCl₂
  2. Na₂CO₃
  3. Na₂SO₄
