as antonio was melancholic by nature there may be many reasons as he fears losing bassanio to portia . He also had a foreboding of some approaching disaster. Je may also wants to be seen as a wise man in a state of melancholy.

Antonio appear to be melancholic throughout the play because of an unknown reason. At the beginning of the play , Salanio and Salarino predicts various reasons for Antonio to be sad however he denies each of them.
the probable reasons of his sadness are :-
1) his richly laden merchandise are bound to the seas .
2) Bassanio has confessed to Antonio about the Lady in Belmont whom Bassanio loves. Therefore Antonio fears that he might be alone and lose a dear friend
3) it was believed that future events casts their shadows earlier . Antonio melancholic nature must be a hint that something bad is going to happen with him in the play later .
4) According to Gratiano it must be the nature of certain people to put up a stern appearance to acquire gravity and respect .
