Why is any metallic part of a machinery never subjected to a stress beyond the elastic limit?

If you stress beyond the elastic limit they will get permanently deformed.
For example. rubber band
if you forcibly pull the rubber band at some point it will break down same case in metals as they are harder they get deformed..
