thats because we are multiplying 2 sides for example in square of side 2 cm ,to get it's area
area of square=side *side
=2 cm * 2cm
4 cm^2(cm*cm)
area of square=side *side
=2 cm * 2cm
4 cm^2(cm*cm)

because its is measured by counting the unit squares under it.that is why it is squared and we write area always in square unit..
