Why is bakelite a good choice for making electrical switches and handles of cooking utensils?

Bakelite is a plastic product and is an insulator of heat. As it is an insulator, the heat conductivity of the handle of cooking vessels and the elecric conductivity of the switches become negligible. Hence it is used.
