Bangla was always a Muslim majority area , the division of Bangla was actively supported by Hindu bhardralok, they were aware that if bangla remain united they will never come to power , the gov and the assembly will always be Muslim majority .
when curzon proposed the division of Bangladesh in 1904 , the spin was put that the English are trying to devide indians and putting into effect .
divide and rule so very of united Bangal and british has proposed the decision of bangla and also in since a case of minority appeasement This was opposed and ultimately the division was withdrawn.
But the fact which was overlooked was this division had tactical support from all sections of Hindu leadership except of Congress which prided itself as secular . But the Bhadralok, the Zamindars etc supported the division and was satisfied in a small portion of earstwhile Bengal as West Bengal where it was Hindu majority and they were aware sooner or later this portion will have Hindu government with Muslims as a less than third of majority.
In 1946 when Muslims of Bengal voted for Muslim league majority it was only area in what became Pakistan where Muslim League was voted with majority on separate Pakistan demand and agenda. Forentier elected congress, Sindh jive Sindh and in Punjab neither congress or Muslim league had majority. Baluchistan has started process for independence as its status was like Ceylone and Burma with British.
So in Bengal the Hindu and Muslim divisions ran deep and historical and in 1947 when borders were drawn the bone of contention was Calcutta and both part expected it to be in their part, and when it was declared to be in India visions riots broke out.
The most vicious riots in 1947 were in Bengal as both protected their turf very violently and the others were killed or pushed out, it took mahatma on fast unto death to convince Suhravardy to rein in his supporters and riots were controlled.
So the division in Bengal is very historical and deep tooted and if anytime a proposal for unity comes it will be opposed very viciously and so violently which has all ingredients to destabilise the entire Indian Subcontinent that it is better to not to think and encourage such move.

Because the borders of modern Bangladesh were established with the partition of Bengal and India in August 1947. When the region became east Pakistan as a part of the newly formed state of Pakistan following the Radcliffe line . However it was separate from west pakistan by 1600 km (994 mi) of Indian territory" and it became a separate independent country.
