Base band signal is not transmitted directly for two reasons : i) Because of the low frequency of base band signals, the size of antenna used should be huge which is practically notpossible. ii) Despite of interferences occured by the waves, the bandwidth of baseband signals tends to infinity here are  main advantages of using a carrier signal instead of transmitting thebaseband signal directly: 1. It allows for higher bandwidths to be transmitted, which translates to higher data rate in digital communication systems.
