On a large scale, it is prepared by passing carbon dioxide gas through calcium hydroxide (slaked lime). However, if carbon dioxide is passed in excess, it forms the soluble calcium hydrogen-carbonate.

It is almost insoluble in water. When calcium carbonate is heated at 1200 K, it decomposes to evolve Carbon dioxide. It is used in the manufacture of quick lime and as a building material in the form of marble.
