Well irrigation is more popular in North India due to the following reasons :-

The southern part of India have seas or oceans around it, unlike the Northern part that mainly has land borders on all sides. So, well irrigation is a better option for Northern India.

Northern India mostly has very fertile, porous and soft soil, making it easier to dig up wells.

Wells can be dug up using cheap manual labour (often by the farmers themselves, at very low cost). But, handpumps or any other forms of irrigation seem to be a bit more expensive and canals are not present everywhere. Thats why farmers in Northern India prefer simple well irrigation as, they are still not economically that much sound. [Sadly, farmer suicides are more common in North India that South India

Answer:

Canal irrigation is more suitable in northern India as compared to southern India because :

  • The rivers of the northern plains are perinnial(as they are snow-fed), whereas the rivers of the southern India are seasonal(depending on rainfall). Therefore, canals are of no use to southern India in dry seasons.

  • Unlike southern India northern India has a flat topography, which makes the construction of canals easier.
